Is Individual Counselling Right for You?
Individual counselling is private, one-to-one work between you and a therapist. Everything moves at your pace, and sessions focus entirely on your experiences and goals.
Signs It May Be Time to Talk to a Therapist
You may benefit from individual counselling if:
- You feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, or unable to switch off
- Anxiety, low mood, or stress is affecting your sleep, work, or relationships
- The same relationship or behavioural patterns keep repeating
- A difficult experience still feels present in your day-to-day life
- You are managing outwardly but struggling privately
- You feel stuck during a transition or uncertain about what comes next
- Your usual coping strategies no longer seem to help
- You want personal growth, even if you are not in crisis
Concerns We Commonly Support in Individual Therapy
Our therapists support adults navigating a wide range of concerns, including:
| Anxiety and social anxiety | Trauma and post-traumatic stress |
| Depression and persistent low mood | Grief and loss |
| Stress and burnout | Low self-esteem and self-worth |
| Anger and emotional regulation | Relationship patterns and boundaries |
| Major life transitions | ADHD and neurodivergence-related challenges |
| Chronic illness and chronic pain | Identity, purpose, and personal growth |
Important: Reset Counselling & Psychotherapy is not an emergency or crisis service. If you are in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. For suicide crisis support in Canada, call or text 988 at any time.

How Individual Counselling Can Help
Progress in therapy is built together. Our therapists do not follow a rigid script — they work with you, not at you.
Understand Patterns and Build Emotional Awareness
Individual counselling may help you:
- Make sense of your thoughts, emotions, and physical responses
- Recognize triggers and repeating patterns in your behaviour or relationships
- Understand how earlier experiences can shape present-day choices
- Identify your core needs, values, and boundaries
- Reduce self-criticism and shame
- Develop a clearer, more honest sense of who you are
These shifts do not happen all at once. Over time, many clients describe a gradual change in how they see themselves — and how they move through the world.
Develop Practical Coping Skills and Move Toward Your Goals
Alongside that deeper awareness, therapy can support real, day-to-day change. Clients may work toward:
- Managing anxiety and emotional overwhelm more effectively
- Improving communication and setting healthier boundaries
- Responding thoughtfully rather than reacting automatically
- Building coping strategies that actually hold up under pressure
- Navigating grief, loss, or significant life change
- Strengthening confidence and emotional resilience
- Creating therapy goals that feel meaningful and achievable
- Applying what they learn in sessions to the rest of their lives
What to Expect From Individual Counselling
at Reset
Many people feel uncertain before their first appointment. That is completely normal — and our goal is to make the process feel as approachable as possible.
Your First 50-Minute Session
Your first session is a conversation, not an assessment. Your therapist will ask what brought you in and what you hope might be different. You do not need to have a prepared explanation or know exactly where to begin.
Together, you may cover:
- What has been difficult lately and how long it has been going on
- Relevant personal history, at whatever level of detail feels right
- Your strengths, goals, and what has helped or not helped in the past
- What you would like therapy to look like
You are welcome to ask your therapist about their style and approach. Fit matters, and you are not expected to disclose everything in a single session. Confidentiality and its limited legal or safety exceptions are also explained during this first meeting.
A Personalized Therapy Plan at Your Pace
There is no single path through therapy. Goals are developed collaboratively, based on what you are working through and how you respond to the work over time.
Some sessions are practical and skill-focused. Others involve deeper reflection or processing. The approach can shift as your needs evolve. You have an active say in what is discussed and how quickly things move. Progress is reviewed openly — if something is not working, we talk about it and adjust.
Choose In-Person or Virtual Counselling
Both formats deliver the same standard of care and continuity of therapist.
- In-person sessions are available at our clinic at Unit 201–151 Essa Road, Barrie, ON
- Virtual sessions are available for clients located in Ontario who prefer remote access
- Your treatment plan and therapeutic relationship remain consistent across both formats
- The right format depends on your privacy needs, accessibility, schedule, and personal comfort
Evidence-Informed Therapy Approaches We May Use
No single technique works for every person or every concern. Your therapist selects approaches based on your needs, goals, their own clinical competence, and your informed consent.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps you identify the connections between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Through cognitive reframing and practical behavioural strategies, it supports you in recognizing unhelpful patterns and responding to them differently. CBT is highly structured and skills-focused, with much of the value applied between sessions — not only in the room.
Trauma-Informed Therapy, EMDR, IFS, CPT, and IATP
For clients working through trauma, our therapists draw on several evidence-based modalities:
- Trauma-informed care prioritizes safety, choice, collaboration, and pacing throughout the therapeutic process
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) processes distressing memories by working directly with how they are stored in the nervous system — without requiring you to retell events in unnecessary detail
- IFS (Internal Family Systems) explores different internal "parts" to build self-understanding and reduce inner conflict
- CPT (Cognitive Processing Therapy) addresses the thought patterns that often follow traumatic experiences
- IATP (Integrative Attachment Trauma Protocol) approaches trauma through the lens of early attachment and relational experience
Your therapist will determine whether any of these modalities is appropriate for your situation.
Mindfulness-Based and Person-Centred Counselling
Mindfulness-based approaches help you build present-moment awareness, emotional regulation, and self-compassion — without being overwhelmed by what comes up. Person-centred counselling offers a collaborative, non-judgmental space that respects your lived experience and builds insight at a pace that feels right for you, rather than following a rigid treatment script.

Frequently Asked Questions About Individual Counselling
Quick answers to the questions we hear most often.
What Is the Difference Between Counselling and Psychotherapy?
The two terms are often used interchangeably, and there is significant overlap in practice. In Ontario, "psychotherapy" is a controlled act regulated by CRPO. Counselling typically refers to the broader process of supportive talk-based care. At Reset, our RPs and RSWs provide both, depending on training, registration, and clinical scope.
How Do I Know Which Therapist Is Right for Me?
Consider their areas of focus, professional designation, therapeutic approach, and communication style. You can read therapist bios and watch profile videos on our website. If you are not sure, our Therapist Match Quiz helps narrow it down — and we are always happy to assist by email or phone.
How Many Individual Counselling Sessions Will I Need?
This depends on your goals, the complexity of what you are working through, how frequently you attend, and how you respond to the work. Some clients benefit from a focused short-term engagement; others prefer ongoing support. Your therapist reviews progress with you regularly, and the plan adjusts as needed.
Is Individual Counselling Confidential?
Yes. Everything discussed in your sessions remains confidential. There are limited exceptions — for example, when there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or when disclosure is required by law. These exceptions are explained clearly during your informed consent process at the start of therapy.
Do I Need a Doctor's Referral to Book Counselling?
No. You can book directly with any therapist at Reset without a referral. Some insurance plans may have their own documentation requirements for reimbursement, so it is worth confirming your plan's specific conditions before your first appointment.
Is Individual Counselling Covered by Insurance or OHIP?
OHIP does not cover private psychotherapy. Many extended health benefit plans may reimburse sessions provided by Registered Psychotherapists or Registered Social Workers, but coverage depends on your specific policy, annual maximums, and eligible designations. We issue official receipts after each session to support your insurance claim.
